LAW #4: Poor Yoga Teachers Suck

July 12th, 2011

Dear Yoga Teacher,

Wanna hear a big fat lie that’s been circulating
for a zillion years or so? It goes like this:

“Money is not spiritual.”

This is not only NOT true, it’s actually NOT possible.

Money is energy: like electricity, calories, wind
and tides. It’s not alive, it has no soul, and no spirit
to connect with at all.

Money is just another way to transfer energy,
like the coal burning to drive the train, like atoms
splitting in two at a nuclear plant that lights up a
city.

Calling money evil is like calling a campfire evil.
It’s nonsense.

People have spirits. People have souls. Some are
good, some are great, and some are just plain rotten.
But your spirituality, your connection to self, doesn’t
have anything to do with how much cash you’ve got
in the bank…

… BUT a universal truth is that the most spiritual people
attract money like magnets. They can’t stop it. They
have to hire people to give it away because it flows so
freely toward them.

There are a number of living saints right now – Sai Babba,
Amma, the Dalai Lama – and all of these people have
more money than they could ever spend.

Why? Because money is energy. If you dig a hole in the
sand, the sea water will fill it up. It you build a turbine
on a hill, the wind will turn its blades and pump out
electricity. And if you are constantly creating value in the
world with the work that you do, money will come to
you just the same.

This is the law of nature, and for you, it’s a blessing.

The simple fact that you’re reading this now means
that you ARE capable of this kind of creative power,
this kind service to the world.

And with that in mind, it’s your duty to give, to share,
to educate and grow – and to generate all the money
you and all your loved ones need to live in abundance.

Maybe that means earning $4,000 per month. Maybe
it means earning $4,000 per day. The numbers are
different for everyone, and ultimately irrelevant.

What’s important is that you understand that your
ability to give and receive is a part of who you
are as a whole person, and every time you say things
like “I don’t care about money,” you are denying your
fundamental talents and gifts.

Embrace opportunity… whether you choose to accept
it or not, it’s all around you every single moment.

Live outside the box,

Lucas

LAW #3: You MUST be Self-Employed

July 12th, 2011

Dear Yoga Teacher,

A big studio in Malaysia just closed its doors last
year – it went out of business! (I spend a lot of time
in Asia, that’s why I know).

And when I say big, I mean BIG.

I don’t know exact numbers, but they had dozens of
teachers, multiple locations, and a very serious
operation going…

… and when the doors closed, 80% of their teachers
where done teaching yoga, some forever, because
they didn’t have any other opportunities lined up.

But here’s the thing:

The 20% who did find other teaching jobs quickly
were those that never saw themselves as working FOR
that studio, they saw themselves as working AT that
studio.

This is what it means to be a self-employed yoga
teacher. No matter what, you work for yourself.

YOU build up your own student base and mailing list.
YOU create opportunities and events.
YOU are the driver of your yoga vehicle.

Smart teachers have friends, connections, and plans in
place to take care of you just in case your studio can’t.

You see, many studios are started by students passionate
about yoga – not business – so things can go badly.

Often they do. And you need to take care of yourself
so you can keep doing what you love, and maybe someday,
(if it’s part of your plan), open a studio of your own and
really take things to the next level.

Understand this:

If do you happen to find a great studio where you can
grow, give, and contribute for X number of years -
that’s great! By all means, do it.

But economies collapse. Rents go up. And stuff
happens. But people will NEVER stop going to yoga
class (really, I mean it).

So what I teach teachers is how to create abundant
teaching opportunities on call as needed, just in
case. If I wanted to, I know 3 studios I could call
tomorrow and start teaching next week.

I’m no superstar teacher, but I am a good teacher.
I can teach a great class, and I’ve made friends and
connections naturally just by doing what I do… yoga!

And you can too.

p.s. I also know how to create my own yoga class
(a mini-business itself) right now, anywhere in the
world, regardless of whether or not there’s a studio
around… do you?

LAW #1: Find Your Passion

July 12th, 2011

Dear Yoga Teacher,

There is nothing in this world as attractive as
someone totally and completely absorbed in
passion…

… and that’s why the most magnetic yoga teachers
in the world are obsessively passionate about what
they teach.

This is more than just LOVING yoga. This is loving
something specific about yoga, or a specific style of
yoga, or even a specific teacher of yoga.

I’m one of those type A personalities, a mad researcher,
and of the 87 or so extremely successful yoga teachers
I’ve studied, over 95% of them are irrationally passionate
about something.

*Maybe it’s locking your knee in a Bikram class

*Maybe it’s drinking warm milk with ghee before
practice (I don’t recommend this btw)

*Maybe it’s the idea that headstand reverses aging

Whatever it is you love about yoga – no matter how
ridiculous, peculiar, or strange – chance are that it’s
your greatest gift.

So explore it, practice it, teach it… and watch
your classes grow!

Remember this:

People live dull lives that revolve around jobs they
hate and ho-hum television shows. They come to
yoga class looking for something new. They want
to go upside down. They want to try funky breathing
practices, and more than anything they want to be
around someone who is just a little bit more connected
to their internal drive than they are.

Say it out loud: P-A-S-S-I-O-N.

Can’t buy it, can’t fake it… you have to find it.
Chances are you already have. But there’s also a good
chance you haven’t gone as far as you could with it.

Go nuts. Go deep. And just watch the doors of opportunity
fly open…
